Last Friday our students had the pleasure of interacting with Dr. Robert Rook of Towson University. Dr. Rook is an expert on the Middle East and is a consultant for military on all the different issues taking place in the Middle East today. Our focus Friday was understanding the vastness both geographically and culturally of the Middle East. We then shifted our conversation towards the current crisis with ISIS. Dr. Rook explained the goals of ISIS, where they are located, the different viewpoints of the countries in the Middle East on ISIS, as well as U.S. involvement.
We enjoyed every second of his visit! After researching and analyzing the Middle East from its ancient empires to all of the current events in the area, our students were excited to talk with an expert on the region. Dr. Rook was so impressed with our seventh graders that he has offered to come back again! Our students said they want to discuss the roots of the issues both in Syria and the Gaza Strip. We hope we can have him back again this spring!
In addition to taking on notes to help further our discussions on the Middle East in class, students were also writing down ideas for next year's National History Day Theme of "Migration and Movement"!
